Mrs. Neilson
Mrs. Neilson creates a dynamic, engaging environment in her classroom. She is a team-player and always focuses in on, “What’s best for students.” This is why she is the Falcon of the Month for October.
Mrs. Neilson’s family came to this country from Mexico not speaking English. School was very difficult because she didn’t understand how to communicate with her teacher. Her family came to the United States from Guadalajara, Mexico (Ameca, and Cuidad Guzman). “Cuidad Guzman is a big city. My parents are there right now,” continued Mrs. Neilson, “My parents are my heroes. They came to this country and worked hard. They just told us that if we didn’t want to work in the fields then we needed to get good grades and we did.” Originally, Mrs. Neilson wanted to be a Pharmacist but as we all are aware her plans soon changed.
In college, Mrs. Neilson majored in Science and then worked at Kaiser Permenente. She applied to pharmacy school and it took about one year to gain admittance into the program. During that time she volunteered at Freeman Elementary School. Mrs. Neilson is a natural teacher; this was easily visible by her teacher mentors who told her that she should think about pursuing a career in education, and not as a pharmacist. This combined with her experience as a catechist when she was 13 made her decide to become a teacher.
Mrs. Neilson is in her 18th year at Freeman. She really loves the school and especially loves the students. She commented, “My favorite thing at Freeman is the students. Seeing the light bulb turn on, and seeing the big growth is great. I want students to know that if I can do it, they can do it. I did it without speaking English. I love my job, and love Freeman, and that is why I am still here.”
When Mrs. Neilson is not teaching she loves spending time with her family. She has two sons named Max, and Jack, and she spends a lot of time with them and her husband. Sometimes she even reads to them her favorite book called, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. She also recently ran the Nike women’s half marathon in San Francisco. She loves to run and stay healthy. Some of her favorite music includes AC/DC , Guns and Roses, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Spanish Music. La familia de la señora Neilson llegó a este país desde México sin hablar Inglés . La escuela era muy difícil, porque ella no entendía cómo comunicarse con su maestra . Mis padres están ahí hoy mismo -, continuó la señora Neilson, -Mis padres son mis héroes. Ellos vinieron a este país y trabajaron duro . Sólo nos dijeron que si no queríamos trabajar en el campo y entonces teníamos que sacar buenas calificaciones- y lo hicimos. Originalmente , la señora Neilson quería ser un farmacéutica , pero como todos son conscientes sus planes pronto cambiaron .
En la universidad, la señora Neilson se especializó en Ciencias y luego trabajó en Kaiser Permenente . Aplico a la escuela de farmacia y ese proceso tomó cerca de un año para ser admitido a el programa. Durante ese tiempo trabajó como voluntaria en la Escuela Primaria de Freeman. Mrs. Neilson ha sido maestra por 18 años en la escuela de Freeman. Ella realmente ama a la escuela y sobre todo ama a los estudiantes. Cuando la señora Neilson no está enseñando le encanta pasar tiempo con su familia. Ella tiene dos hijos llamados Maxx, y Jack , y ella pasa mucho tiempo con ellos y su marido. A veces incluso les lee su libro favorito llamado , "Lluvia de albóndigas." Ella también publicó recientemente un medio maratón de mujeres de Nike en San Francisco.
