Mrs. McCurdy
Mrs. McCurdy is our Falcon of the Month for November. Mrs. McCurdy is not afraid to “roll up her sleeves” and try something new as she is always exciting her students with innovative practices. Parents often say, “Mrs. McCurdy is a great teacher.” She is even the first teacher to begin using Google Docs in her classroom at Freeman; this is one step in creating the classroom of the future. “I like the idea how I can make comments right back to them, I like that they can make their corrections, plus that is how they will write in their life,” ascertained Mrs. McCurdy.
She was born in Oakland, CA but grew up in Albany, CA. When growing up she loved to go to the park every morning, and she also loves swimming. When she was thirteen she became a swimming instructor. Mrs. McCurdy comes from a family of hardworking immigrants as her grandparents came from Ireland and Italy. “We come from a family who just work,” stated Mrs. McCurdy. “My grandfather was a gardener and my other grandfather a miner.” After her three children started school Mrs. received a Masters in Social Work and this led her to her position as the Director of the Wayfarer Center in Woodland. After her children’s graduations from college and their marriages, she choose to become a teacher.
Before starting at UC Berkeley, she met her husband, Gary. They each put each other through school and have been married for 45 years. “He is a criminal defense lawyer and is the most important person of all to me,” mentioned Mrs. McCurdy. Her children’s names are Regina, Daniel, and Patricia. They went to Woodland schools. Her oldest daughter started at Freeman, then they all went to Dingle, Douglass, and Woodland High School, where they were active in music and cross country. They all went to college and now her oldest daughter, Gina, is a freelance writer and lives on horse ranch, her son, Daniel, is in banking and finance, and her youngest daughter, Patricia works in physical and exercise therapy. She has 5 grandchildren all between 4th and 9th grades.
Mrs. McCurdy enjoys her job because she loves seeing student grow and learn. “I have been taking care of people all of my life,” stated Mrs. McCurdy. Teaching provides an opportunity to help out students especially when she taught at Cache Creek High School for 8 years. “I’ve been at Freeman nine years. I love to see kids get turned on to good books. I love teaching math and the new Common Core math. My favorite thing is the staff. This is the most companionable group of people I have ever worked with. Everyone is working so hard and everyone appreciates that about each other,” said Mrs. McCurdy.
Mrs. McCurdy has a multitude of hobbies as she loves the outdoors. “We have done a lot of biking including century rides and a 350 mile 5-day ride with a 10,000 ft. elevation gain. It was all fun!” She also has some pets. “I have some dogs. Teddy is a 7-year- old pug terrier, Moxie is a 2- year-old dachshund-basenji, and Pixie is a 1- year- old, shepherd mix. I take them to the mountains and take them to Donner Lake. We do a lot with them. When we get together with my family we have a total of 8 dogs!” exclaimed Mrs. McCurdy. Mrs. McCurdy also has favorite books. “I read 6th grade books such as “Wonder”, I just begun to read “The Long Walk to Water.” It is an amazing book. I haven’t read a true adult novel since I began teaching,” remarked Mrs. McCurdy. Her biggest message to students is to be kind to each other. She truly wants them to succeed in life.
